CSADA™....An Alternative to CPAP

"My wife is absolutely amazed that I don’t keep her up with snoring anymore because it stopped. I wake up in the morning ready to attack the day. Wearing a CPAP was torture, but I sleep comfortably with the CSADA™ appliance. If I could inspire anyone to come here by making this statement, I’d feel even better.” - Anthony T.

“I couldn't tolerate CPAP at all, but my CSADA™ is completely comfortable because there are no straps or hoses. I feel real freedom wearing the appliance. It's so much easier carrying this little tiny appliance compared to the great big CPAP machine with its wires and hoses. I'm not tired driving an hour to and from work, and I'm not even tired after lunch anymore. Everyone here treated me very well." - Pamela C.

“Now I have a full day everyday because of the new energy I have now that I switched from CPAP. I used to have to take naps but never felt refreshed until I started wearing my CSADA™ appliance. Even the headaches and pressure I had around my eyes every single day are now gone. What’s more, my husband used to beat me up in the middle of the night with a pillow because of the snoring. He doesn’t have to anymore!” - Carol B.

“The CPAP was so uncomfortable that I woke up throughout the night and had to take it off. It often kept me from falling asleep for long periods of time. I hardly notice that I’m wearing my sleep apnea appliance and sleep great. Even with the CPAP I used to fall asleep in classes and had to nap in the afternoon, but I feel great since I started wearing the appliance instead of the CPAP.” - Seth E.

The most common treatment for Sleep Apnea is a device called CPAP which is short for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.

The enormous number of people who cannot tolerate CPAP have genuine reasons to have concerns about their health. Fortunately, there is a very effective and successful alternative. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (the professional Academy for physicians who specialize in sleep disorders) has designated oral appliances as a first-line treatment for sleep apnea for those who prefer them to CPAP. The Academy also pointed out that oral appliances should be fitted by dental personnel who are trained and experienced in the overall care of "the temporomandibular joint".

Oral sleep appliances are similar in appearance to athletic mouthguards, but have additional sections. They are worn during sleep to maintain airway opening. Oral sleep appliances are safe, do not make noise, and are easy to use. There are also few, if any, problems associated with their use. However, one size does not fit all.

There are many different FDA-approved oral appliances we can use to treat sleep-disordered breathing. Regardless of the appliance selected, to be effective, it must be properly customized and precision fit for each patient.

Using our pharyngometer computer, we can ordinarily tell in advance whether an oral sleep appliance can eliminate the need for CPAP or surgery. For patients with severe sleep problems, an oral appliance can be an effective and convenient adjunct therapy.

This special computer which was developed at Harvard can help you know in advance whether this tiny life-saving device will work for you and help us to adjust it so you can probably obtain all of these benefits the very first night. What’s more, in most cases, it’s covered by insurance.

How Can CSADA™ successfully treat Sleep Apnea?

The Pharyngometer measures the opening of the airway using completely painless and safe sound waves. Using the computer readings to guide us, we find the precise mouth opening and jaw position to allow for the maximum air intake. The oral sleep appliance is then constructed and fit to the patient in precisely that position. It is wonderful to know that the Pharyngometer virtually guarantees that we can find the best position for each patient.

Just as important is the fact that it can also be used to determine in advance which patients would not benefit from oral appliances thereby saving them the time and cost involved in creating a custom made device which would not be medically useful. Sleep apnea events occur when a person stops breathing while asleep because the airway is forced closed. This may occur, for example, if the tongue falls backward and blocks the airway. As a result, no air can get to the lungs for long periods of time. If the jaws are separated and brought forward just the right amount, the blocked airway opens up thereby allowing for normal relaxed breathing. The appliance works on the same principle as is used everyday to save lives when people stop breathing. By moving the jaw forward, you can open up the airway to allow air to move more freely into and out of the lungs.

Thus, the CSADA™ oral sleep appliance can be worn to gently bring the jaw into the best position to dramatically increase air intake and stop snoring.

Normal Breathing During Sleep - Notice how wide the airway is between the back of the tongue and the back of the throat.
Snoring - During sleep, the tongue and other muscles relax. Notice how small the airway between the back of the throat becomes in a person who snores.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea - Here the muscles have relaxed so much that the airway is blocked, thereby making it very difficult to breathe. CSADA™ appliances work by gently bringing the jaw and tongue forward just enough to keep the airway open but not so much as to cause discomfort or pain. CPAP works by forcing compressed air into the blocked airway under pressure all night long using an electrically operated pump. It works, but why use CPAP when CSADA™ is available?

Following is the summary of the updated position paper of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine which determined that oral appliances are a first-line treatment for sleep apnea.
