And
most important of all, it can save your
life by successfully helping you to enjoy deeper
sleep throughout the night without snoring, choking or gasping
for air.
Our
special computer which was developed at Harvard can help
you know in advance whether this tiny life-saving device
will work for you and help us to adjust it so you can probably
obtain all of these benefits the very first night.
What’s more, in most cases, it’s covered by
insurance.

WHAT
IF YOU PREFER NOT TO SLEEP WITH A CPAP MASK OVER YOUR FACE
ALL NIGHT?
We
have treatment options so you can sleep like this
|
Fortunately,
there is a very effective and successful alternative. The
American Academy of Sleep Medicine (the professional Academy
for physicians who specialize in sleep disorders) has designated
oral appliances as a first-line treatment for sleep apnea
for those who prefer them to CPAP. The Academy also pointed
out that oral appliances should be fitted by dental personnel
who are trained and experienced in the overall care of "the
temporomandibular joint".
Ira Klemons, D.D.S., Ph.D. is the Director of the Center
for Sleep Apnea. In addition to the Doctor of Dental Surgery
degree, he was awarded the first Ph.D. specifically related
to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related dysfunctions
and treatment, and has treated these conditions for over
thirty years. The Center exclusively treats headaches, temporomandibular
joint dysfunctions, and Sleep Apnea, and has experience
with many thousands of patients from across the United States
and around the world.
Thanks to advances in dental sleep medicine, we can effectively
treat patients who suffer from snoring, obstructive sleep
apnea, and upper airway resistance syndrome using oral appliance
therapy.
Oral sleep appliances are similar in appearance to athletic
mouthguards, but have additional sections. They are worn
during sleep to maintain airway opening. Oral sleep appliances
are safe, do not make noise, and are easy to use. There
are also few, if any, problems associated with their use.
However, one size does not fit all.
There are many different FDA-approved oral appliances we
can use to treat sleep-disordered breathing. Regardless
of the appliance selected, to be effective, it must be properly
customized and precision fit for each patient.
Using
our pharyngometer computer, we can ordinarily tell in advance
whether an oral sleep appliance can eliminate the need for
CPAP or surgery. For patients with severe sleep problems,
an oral appliance can be an effective and convenient adjunct
therapy.
HOW
CAN CSADATM SUCCESSFULLY
TREAT SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep
apnea events occur when a person stops breathing while asleep
because the airway is forced closed. This may occur, for
example, if the tongue falls backward and blocks the airway.
As a result, no air can get to the lungs for long periods
of time. If the jaws are separated and brought forward just
the right amount, the blocked airway opens up thereby allowing
for normal relaxed breathing. The appliance works on the
same principle as is used everyday to save lives when people
stop breathing. By moving the jaw forward, you can open
up the airway to allow air to move more freely into and
out of the lungs.
Thus, the CSADA™ oral sleep appliance can be worn
to gently bring the jaw into the best position to dramatically
increase air intake and stop snoring.
|
Normal
Breathing During Sleep - Notice how wide
the airway is between the back of the tongue and the
back of the throat. |
|
Snoring - During sleep, the tongue and other
muscles relax. Notice how small the airway between
the back of the throat becomes in a person who snores.
|

Obstructive Sleep Apnea - Here
the muscles have relaxed so much that the airway
is blocked, thereby making it very difficult to
breathe. CSADA™ appliances work by gently
bringing the jaw and tongue forward just enough
to keep the airway open but not so much as to cause
discomfort or pain. CPAP works by forcing compressed
air into the blocked airway under pressure all night
long using an electrically operated pump. It works,
but why use CPAP when CSADA™ is available?
|
ARE
ORAL SLEEP APNEA APPLIANCES COMFORTABLE?
Yes
they are comfortable. The vast majority of patients are
happy to wear them knowing that they effectively treat snoring
and gasping for air (sleep apnea), thereby halting the resulting
daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure, heart attacks,
strokes and even death.
CSADA™
is our
trademarked custom-made oral appliance which is worn while
sleeping. It uses the latest technological advances to aid
therapeutic positioning.
WHAT
DOES ALL THIS MEAN TO ME AS A CPAP INTOLERANT PATIENT?
This
means you have an answer to one of your biggest health worries.
The oral appliances which we employ are patented, FDA approved,
and state-of-the-art. The Pharyngometer computer helps us
to find the optimum jaw position to allow a person to sleep
comfortably while allowing for maximum air intake. Your
health fears can be eliminated by the fact that enormous
benefits brought about by the CPAP can be potentially achieved
with an oral appliance. You can live a healthy life without
the CPAP!
DOES
HEALTH INSURANCE PROVIDE COVERAGE?
Most
quality health insurance companies provide coverage.
“Now
I have a full day everyday because of the new energy I have
now that I switched from CPAP. I used to have to take naps
but never felt refreshed until I started wearing my CSADA™
appliance. Even the headaches and pressure I had around
my eyes every single day are now gone. What’s more,
my husband used to beat me up in the middle of the night
with a pillow because of the snoring. He doesn’t have
to anymore!” - Carol B.
WHAT
IS SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep
Apnea involves a condition in which a person stops breathing
over and over again throughout the night, in many cases,
for long periods of time. The side effects of this condition
can be fatal. Sleep Apnea is a serious medical disorder
affecting as many as 10% of middle-aged men and 6% of middle-aged
women in the United States. In addition, 1% to 20% of children
may be affected.
Snoring
is not dangerous in and of itself. However, many believe
that it can lead to Sleep Apnea. At the least, snoring can
be extremely annoying, especially to bed partners, who often
have to sleep in a different room to avoid being kept awake
all night by the buzzsaw noise.
Suspicious
signs and symptoms of sleep apnea may include:
- Snoring -
loud and heavy, sometimes accompanied by snorting and
gasping
- Long pauses
in breathing during sleep
- Morning headache
- Cluster headache
- Excessive
daytime sleepiness and unexplained fatigue
- Personality,
alertness, memory, and behavior changes
- Memory loss
- Obesity
- Acid Reflux
(G.E.R.D.)
- In some cases,
ADHD and similar conditions
While diagnosis requires confirmation via a Sleep Study
(polysomnography), in conjunction with an appropriate medical
specialist, practitioners, such as ourselves, may have a
pivotal role in recognizing and treating this condition.
UNTREATED
SLEEP APNEA IS LIFE THREATENING AND A MAJOR HEALTH PROBLEM
The
biggest problem is shortage of oxygen to the body throughout
sleep. This affects every aspect of your health. Poor oxygen
intake contributes to premature aging.
When left untreated, sleep apnea is believed to take an
average of eight years off of a person’s life.
Sleep apnea can cause the following:
- High blood
pressure - 90% of people with hypertension have sleep
apnea and 60% of sleep apnea patients develop hypertension.

- Heart attacks
and heart disease.
- Strokes
- Sudden death
(a former Green Bay Packer football player named
Reggie White died of respiratory failure reportedly
due to sleep apnea).
- Depression
- Severe memory
loss - in certain cases dementia
- Loss of sexual
interest
- Fatigue and
lack of energy - sleepiness throughout the day. Sleepiness
is one of the most common causes of automobile
accidents and related injuries.
- Headaches
as well as aches and pains throughout the body
- Fibromyalgia
- Inability
to reach deep sleep. This is called Level 3 sleep and
is required for growth and healing hormones
to be formed and released into the body.
- Premature
aging
Since
everyone’s body relies on inhalation of an adequate
amount of oxygen in air 24 hours a day, many other medical
conditions heal slowly, or perhaps not at all, in patients
who hold their breath for long periods of time hundreds
of times each night.
An
often overlooked side-effect of snoring and sleep apnea
is that they can keep a bed partner from sleeping, thereby
causing daytime sleepiness and other medical problems associated
with inadequate sleep. Many patients have told us that they
and their partner routinely sleep in separate rooms. The
CSADA™ appliance can bring them back together.
The
most common treatment for Sleep Apnea is a device called
CPAP which is short for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.
The
enormous number of people who cannot tolerate CPAP have
genuine reasons to have concerns about their health. Fortunately,
we have answers to resolve the problem for most sleep apnics
and snorers.
WHAT IS NASAL CPAP AND WHY DO SO
MANY USERS DESPERATELY WANT AND NEED AN ALTERNATIVE?
Nasal CPAP machines deliver pressurized air through a hose
to a mask which covers the nose and part of the face. It
is typically held in place by straps which surround the
head and face. The flow of the air acts like an “air
splint” to keep the upper airway open and prevent
apnea (i.e. shortness of breath). CPAP machines have 99%
efficiency in restoring normal breathing during sleep. They
have undergone improvements since an Australian invented
the first one using a vacuum cleaner and a length of hose.

This is a patient using a CPAP
Unfortunately,
CPAP can be very noisy and uncomfortable to wear while sleeping.
As the severity of the sleep apnea problem increases, the
pressure of the air forced into the nose must be raised.
Sleep medicine literature reports have shown that as many
as 80% of the people who try to wear CPAP cannot tolerate
it and stop.
“Even
though I was using CPAP, I haven’t had as much energy
for years as I’ve had since receiving my CSADA™
appliance. What’s more, I don’t have to lug
my CPAP when I go away and don’t have to wear hoses
or a mask, or listen to the CPAP noises anymore. What a
pleasure! I barely know that I’m wearing my sleep
appliance.” - Robert
M.
HOW
DOES THE POSITION OF THE JAW NEED TO BE CHANGED TO GET AN
ADEQUATE AIRFLOW?
In
the past, the only way to determine the best position for
the jaw involved guessing, and trial and error. Having years
of experience with treating sleep apnea, we were proud of
our high success rate. But this has been eclipsed enormously
by the development at Harvard University of an extremely
accurate computer called a Pharyngometer.
We can now eliminate the guess work and objectively determine
the best possible position for the jaw and oral appliance
by taking computerized measurements while the patient blows
into a specially designed mouthpiece.

Testing is painless and as simple
as blowing into a tube
The
Pharyngometer measures the opening of
the airway using completely painless and safe sound waves.
Using the computer readings to guide us, we find the precise
mouth opening and jaw position to allow for the maximum
air intake. The oral sleep appliance is then constructed
and fit to the patient in precisely that position. It is
wonderful to know that the Pharyngometer virtually guarantees
that we can find the best position for each patient.
“I was really
looking forward to treatment with Dr. Klemons
and made the trip from New York. I was very
impressed by his extensive and painless
testing and the fact that he was so honest
that he did not recommend treatment even
though I really wanted it.” - Louis
L.
|
|
Just
as important is the fact that it can also be used to determine
in advance which patients would not benefit from oral appliances
thereby saving them the time and cost involved in creating
a custom made device which would not be medically useful.
What Do Sleep Apnea and Snoring Appliances Look Like?
As
you can see, they generally look like athletic
mouth guards but are precision made to hold the jaws in
the best position to allow for maximum breathing while allowing
for jaw movements while sleeping. Following is an example
of one type of appliance. However, the best one for you
may appear somewhat different.

We are looking forward to seeing you and
helping you attain a better quality of life without CPAP
or snoring.
|
“I
propose that Dr. Klemons should be elevated to sainthood
because he stopped my husband’s snoring with
a CSADA™ appliance. ” - Louise S. (wife) |
 |
“I
used to have to doze virtually every afternoon to
have any sensation of energy, and now I don’t
have to at all. I have enough energy to stay up until
the wee hours of the morning which is great. And my
wife says I don’t snore anymore at all, but
she still does. It used to be a race to see who could
fall asleep first. She’ll be coming here next.”
- James M. |
 |
“I
would have sold my soul to the devil for more energy
because I was constantly dragging until I started
using my CSADA™ appliance. The appliance is
completely comfortable. I feel like a different person
and my wife is ecstatic because I don’t snore
anymore.” - Gregory M. |
 |
“I
tried really hard to use a bipap but just couldn’t
take it. It made me feel like I was going to have
a panic attack. Before I used my CSADA™ appliance,
I used to wake up shaking and had terrible headaches
and sore throats and was gasping for air even before
I went to sleep. It’s such a relief to be able
to sleep through the night and to wake up without
headaches and to not have to worry that sleep apnea
will do to me what it did to my father who went through
hell with numerous strokes and heart attacks.”
- Edna P. |
 |
“No
more snoring! No more stopped breathing! I feel like
a new person. The doctors and staff here are amazing
and exceptional - real professionals. My wife and
I are amazed how everyone here works together and
does such a great job.” - Bartholomew P. |
 |
“The
CSADA™ appliance is the best thing that ever
happened to me. I never thought it could work so well.
I actually sleep all night. I haven’t had to
nap and have so much more energy even though I go
to bed later than I used to. It’s just amazing.”
- Monica B. |
 |
My
wife is absolutely amazed that I don’t keep
her up with snoring anymore because it stopped. I
wake up in the morning ready to attack the day. Wearing
a CPAP was torture, but I sleep comfortably with the
CSADA™ appliance. If I could inspire anyone
to come here by making this statement, I’d feel
even better.” - Anthony T. |
 |
"This
device is a "feat of medical science". I’m
even losing weight because I’m sleeping better.
When you look at the CPAP, the hose, and the nose
appliance and realize you have to clean the filter
and hose, and all the things you have to do to maintain
the CPAP, this oral appliance is amazing!
My
stay here was very enjoyable and informative. Everyone
was knowledgeable and courteous and made the testing
completely comfortable.” - Carmine G. |
 |
“I
never thought I could sleep so well–but I did
the very first night after receiving my CSADA™
appliance. It’s truly a miracle. I used to have
to take three hour naps after work but don’t
have to nap at all anymore–so I have so much
more time in the day. I have more strength, and I
finally feel rested.” - Sonya Z. |
 |
“My
CSADA™ appliance stopped the snoring (which
really makes my wife happy because now she can sleep
too) and even though I increased my work schedule
from 5 days/40 hours a week to 7 days/70 hours a week,
I still have more energy than I’ve had for many
years. This is especially surprising because I have
severe sleep apnea and CPAP didn’t help. Everyone
here is wonderful to deal with and really knowledgeable.
I tell everybody who has sleep apnea to come here.”
- Bruce K. |
 |
“The CPAP
was so uncomfortable that I woke up throughout the
night and had to take it off. It often kept me from
falling asleep for long periods of time. I hardly
notice that I’m wearing my sleep apnea appliance
and sleep great. Even with the CPAP I used to fall
asleep in classes and had to nap in the afternoon,
but I feel great since I started wearing the appliance
instead of the CPAP.” - Seth E |
 |
“Until I
came to the Center for Sleep Apnea, I didn’t
even understand what my sleep apnea problem was all
about. I really appreciate the education. Before I
came here, I tried CPAP and ripped it off because
it freaked me out. I was skeptical about the oral
appliance but am now pleasantly surprised. I’m
not sleepy like I used to be and haven’t missed
a day wearing it. The computers and staff at the Center
are amazing. I know I came to the right place”
- Peter C. |
 |
“Sleep
apnea made me so sleepy during the day that I dozed
off while driving. When I was gasping for air my legs
would jump around because I was fighting for my life.
The snoring was so loud that I kept my wife up almost
every night. I knew that I needed treatment but the
CPAP mask was too uncomfortable to wear, so I had
throat surgery. Not only was the surgery and recovery
a horrendous ordeal which caused the worst pain I
ever had in my life for an entire month, but the sleep
apnea came back and the snoring became even louder.
Three years ago, the doctors at the Center for Sleep
Apnea made me an appliance to stop my snoring and
apnea. I’m sure that it saved my life. Neither
the snoring nor the apnea are a problem anymore. The
appliance is comfortable and it worked perfectly beginning
the first day I received it. I was surprised that
it didn’t even require adjustments. I sleep
longer and better than at anytime in my life and I
wake up fully rested.
I cannot imagine a better way to treat these problems
than with the CSADA™ appliance. It’s wonderful
to know that the cost was covered by insurance, but
I can honestly say that it’s worth any amount
of money.” - Alton N. |
 |
“My husband’s sleep apnea kept me up at
night worrying because he was almost constantly gasping
for air, and the deafening buzz saw snoring didn’t
make sleeping any easier.
Our
lives changed three years ago from the very first
night he started using his CSADA™ appliance.
Everyone at the Center was so helpful and knowledgeable.
I only wish he had the appliance sooner.” -
Connie N.
|
| |
“I can’t
get over how great it is to not be tangled up in the
CPAP hoses and not have the pressure from the CPAP
mask on my face anymore. I used to wake up all night
long with the CPAP, but now I sleep through the night
with the CSADA™ appliance.” - Peter R.
|

|
“I
can only say that the CSADA™ appliance is amazing.
My wife is ecstatic because I don’t snore or
gasp for breath anymore and that’s unbelievable
to me because I had very severe sleep apnea for years
and couldn’t stand the CPAP. Even my sinuses
and post-nasal drip cleared up. I used to get up three
times a night, but never get up anymore. I never thought
the appliance could have such an effect and it was
perfectly comfortable the very first night. I don’t
even notice it’s there.” - Roger Z. |
 |
“I
was tested at the Center to see whether a sleep apnea
appliance would help me. I wish it would, but I was
impressed with the doctor’s honesty when he
told me that it isn’t appropriate for me.”
Louis B. |
 |
“My
wife is incredibly happy - she can sleep again now
that I stopped snoring and gasping for air all night.
I couldn’t wear the CPAP™ because it was
very, very uncomfortable but the CSADA™ appliance
is no problem at all. I literally work 17 hours a
day, 7 days a week and have more energy than I ever
imagined. ” - Mark J. |
 |
“I
couldn’t stand CPAP and had no treatment for
10 years because I couldn’t handle it. The oral
appliance is easy to use and very comfortable. I have
mild sleep apnea so I thought my energy level was
good before, but now it’s even better.”
- Stuart P. |
 |
“Now that
I have my CSADA™ appliance, I’m absolutely
thrilled because I can finally sleep through the entire
night for the first time in as long as I can remember.
I have enough energy to start to exercise again. I
have a full-time job, but I’m amazed that I
even have enough energy to do school work at night.”
- Michele P. |
 |
“Since I switched from CPAP,
I can roll over in bed. In addition, I don’t have
to disconnect myself from the hoses and mask if I get
up during the night, but now I almost never have to
anymore since I stopped using my CPAP. My sleepiness
level is ZERO on the Epworth Scale.” - John L. |
 |
“My headaches and lack of sleep
were virtually debilitating. I just didn’t feel
like doing anything. What a relief now that it’s
all gone.” - Denise S. |
 |
“My wife
used to wear ear plugs or had me sleep in another
room until I started wearing my CSADA™ appliance.
Now she says I don’t make a peep. I couldn’t
tolerate the CPAP at all but don’t even notice
the appliance is in my mouth.” - Dan M. (Police
Sergeant) |
 |
“After
not being able to use a CPAP, I found the CSADA™
appliance very easy to wear. The information and literature
I received here told me everything I needed to know.
It was all true. My wife moved back in with me because
the snoring stopped and I have more energy. I’m
impressed, so I referred my brother to come here.”
- John C. |
 |
“I
couldn’t use the CPAP even though I have very
severe sleep apnea, but the greatest thing is that
with my CSADA™ appliance I don’t have
to get up four times a night anymore. I feel more
alert and don’t feel like I can fall asleep
driving to work, and my wife says I don’t gasp
and struggle to breathe anymore.” - Vincent
P. |
 |
“This
CSADA™ appliance is amazing. I’ve worn
it every night. My husband doesn’t hear me snoring
anymore and says I’m 100% better after 21 years
of snoring. I also have more energy and feel more
rested. When I wake up, I don’t feel like going
back to sleep. I really appreciate the care I’ve
received here.” - Ismaela M. |
 |
"I can't say
enough about my CSADA™ appliance. I was so glad
to be able to give back my CPAP. I've been telling
my friends and co-workers to come here. After I showed
my appliance to my friend and told him how well it
works he said, "My God! I have to check this
out". - Raymond M. |
 |
“After
using the CSADA™ appliance, I cannot imagine
going back to my CPAP. I was waking up 10 times a
night choking and gasping for air, but don’t
have that problem anymore.” - Gary C. |
 |
“I
love being able to sleep in any position with my CSADA™
appliance. I tried two different CPAP machines, but
couldn’t get used to them. I’d wake up
with the mask in my hand. Getting used to the CSADA™
appliance was easy. My wife is thrilled that we don’t
need to have the CPAP machines in the bedroom anymore.
What’s more, the foggy feeling I used to have
is completely gone. The care and concern I’ve
experienced in this office is unlike any I’ve
seen before. ” - John R. |
 |
“I’m
sleeping. My wife is sleeping. I wouldn’t want
to be without my appliance. I didn’t even know
how tired I was until I stopped being tired because
of the CSADA™ appliance.” - Thomas I. |
 |
“Even with
severe sleep apnea and a bad sinus infection I feel
better with my CSADA™ appliance than with my
CPAP.” - Jeff S. |
 |
“I used
to sleep 10 hours and still felt tired because I have
severe sleep apnea, but since I started wearing my
CSADA™ appliance, even with a 1 ½ week
old baby, I feel more awake and have more energy.
After trying CPAP I knew I couldn’t use it and
didn’t feel better, but I certainly do now.”
- Robert S. |
|
“My husband
loves Dr. Klemons because I don’t snore anymore!
My husband and I are sleeping together again and I’m
sleeping through the night like a baby. ” -
Kathryn B. |
 |
“The CSADA™
appliance is great. I don’t even know it’s
there. It’s easy to wear. I can even sleep without
sleeping pills. The appliance works like a charm.
I also want to say that Dr. Klemons and his staff
are great. Coming here has been one of the most enjoyable
experiences I’ve ever had.” - Scott B. |
 |
“After
I started using my CSADA™ appliance I dreamt
for the first time I can remember and was able to
drive 6 ½ hours without becoming sleepy. I
couldn’t tolerate CPAP for a second, but I don’t
even notice the appliance anymore.” - Andrew
S. |
 |
“I’m
sleeping much more comfortably and It’s nice
to be able to roll over in any position now that I
wear my CSADA™ appliance instead of CPAP. My
wife is thrilled that I’m not snoring anymore
or wearing my “scuba gear” at night. It
was also great to be able to go on a trip with my
little appliance instead of having to lug my CPAP.”
- Michael B. |
 |
"I
don't snore anymore, the CSADA™ appliance is
very easy to use. I virtually never wake up during
the night, I never gasp for air, kick my legs, or
need to sleep in another room. This is a great office.
What more can I ask?" - Peter D. |
 |
“I
don’t wake up gasping for air and I don’t
have panic attacks since I started wearing my appliance.
Everyone here is awesome. Dr. Klemons is one in a
million. I wish that other doctors were as attentive
and explained everything as well as he does.”-
Joelle S. |
 |
“The
results of using the CSADA™ appliance are astounding!
I don’t snore or stop breathing anymore - period.”
- Bill O. |
 |
“My
wife and I are sleeping in the same room every night
for the first time in years - ever since I received
my CSADA™ appliance. I couldn’t even put
the CPAP on me. It scared my grandson and made him
cry, but no one can see or hear noise from the CSADA™
because there is none. Where I used to wear down in
the mid-afternoon - now I keep going.” - Daniel
D. |
 |
“The
noise of the CPAP and having to put it on and off
in the middle of the night were driving me crazy.
I was so skeptical before getting the CSADA™
but it’s really great. Not feeling tired is
also a real plus and I don’t have to take naps
anymore. Psychologically it feels good to have the
Sleep Apnea gone - which was proven by a sleep lab
study. Everyone here treated me great.” - Francis
R. |
 |
“It’s
really great that I can sleep in the same room as
my wife for the first time in a very long time, and
I definitely have more energy since I’ve been
wearing my CSADA™ appliance. The CPAP really
wasn’t wearable. I normally hate going to other
doctors' offices but Dr. Klemons and his staff are
the best I’ve ever been to and that’s
no exaggeration!” - Bernard H.
|
| |
“I’ve
been completely diligent wearing my CSADA™ appliance
every night since I received it a year ago. I can
change position and don’t have to deal with
the stupid hose on the CPAP. I tried three CPAPs and
couldn’t stand any of them. The appliance is
so portable and unobtrusive. I love being able to
go away on vacation with this little appliance instead
of the CPAP.” - Benita B. |
Following
is the summary of the updated position paper of the American
Academy of Sleep Medicine which determined that oral appliances
are a first-line treatment for sleep apnea.
IMPORTANT
DISCOVERIES ABOUT SLEEP APNEA
Obesity
- Especially Fat Around the Waist
Obstructive
Sleep Apnea is common in people who suffer from obesity.
Research shows that treatment of apnea may lead to the loss
of fat deposits especially around the waist. The level of
hormones which control body weight may also be effected,
thereby assisting people with apnea to lose abdominal weight
naturally.

K, Shimizu, K, Nakamura T, et al. Changes in intra-abdominal
visceral fat and serum leptin levels in patients with
obstructive sleep apnea syndrome following nasal continuous
positive airway pressure therapy. Circulation 1999;706-712
Panic
Attacks
People
who have panic attacks at night and also have sleep apnea
typically find that both conditions improve when sleep apnea
is properly treated.
Edmund
M, McNamara E, Millman R. Sleep apnea and panic attacks.
Compreh. Psychiatry; 32,2; 1991 (March/April) 130-132.
Parkinson's
Disease
A
long-term study by neurologists of 3,000 participants concluded
that excessive daytime sleepiness, which is a common result
of sleep apnea, may be associated with an increased risk
of developing Parkinson Disease.
Abbott
RD, Ross, GW, White LR, et al. Excessive daytime sleepiness
and subsequent development of Parkinson disease. Neurology
2005;65: 1442-1446.
Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy
Sleep apnea can increase the risk of developing glaucoma
and can worsen the symptoms of several serious eye diseases
which are listed below. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases
in which the optic nerve is slowly destroyed resulting in
vision loss. By the time vision problems are obvious (e.g.,
seeing a halo around objects, blurred vision, eye pain,
sense of pressure in the eye, peripheral vision loss, or
night blindness), damage to the eye has usually progressed
substantially.
The eye diseases referred to above include:
• glaucoma
• anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION)
• papilledema
• diabetic retinopathy
