Important Discoveries About Sleep Apnea

Obesity - Especially Fat Around the Waist

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is common in people who suffer from obesity. Research shows that treatment of apnea may lead to the loss of fat deposits especially around the waist. The level of hormones which control body weight may also be effected, thereby assisting people with apnea to lose abdominal weight naturally.

Chin K, Shimizu, K, Nakamura T, et al. Changes in intra-abdominal visceral fat and serum leptin levels in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome following nasal continuous positive airway pressure therapy. Circulation 1999;706-712

Panic Attacks

People who have panic attacks at night and also have sleep apnea typically find that both conditions improve when sleep apnea is properly treated.

Edmund M, McNamara E, Millman R. Sleep apnea and panic attacks. Compreh. Psychiatry; 32,2; 1991 (March/April) 130-132.

Parkinson's Disease

A long-term study by neurologists of 3,000 participants concluded that excessive daytime sleepiness, which is a common result of sleep apnea, may be associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson Disease.

Abbott RD, Ross, GW, White LR, et al. Excessive daytime sleepiness and subsequent development of Parkinson disease. Neurology 2005;65: 1442-1446.

Glaucoma and Diabetic Retinopathy

Sleep apnea can increase the risk of developing glaucoma and can worsen the symptoms of several serious eye diseases which are listed below. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve is slowly destroyed resulting in vision loss. By the time vision problems are obvious (e.g., seeing a halo around objects, blurred vision, eye pain, sense of pressure in the eye, peripheral vision loss, or night blindness), damage to the eye has usually progressed substantially.

The eye diseases referred to above include:

  • glaucoma
  • anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION)
  • papilledema
  • diabetic retinopathy

This material was presented to give you a better understanding of how you can go on with your life with treatment other than CPAP. If you would like to have a consultation and be tested with the Pharyngometer (the computer that measures the airway), please schedule a diagnostic appointment at the Center for Sleep Apnea.
